Why convert JPG to AVIF?

At matched visual quality AVIF holds a photo in roughly half the bytes of a JPG, and it fails more gracefully when pushed — smooth gradients instead of blocking, clean edges instead of ringing. For photo-heavy pages this is the biggest page-weight cut available without dropping resolution. It is still a re-encode, so start from the highest-quality JPG you have rather than one already squeezed.

Frequently asked questions

Is AVIF supported well enough to serve to real visitors?

Yes — Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge have all shipped AVIF decoding for years, so it is safe as a primary format for general audiences. If you need to cover very old clients, serve it from a `<picture>` element with a JPG fallback and browsers that understand AVIF will take the smaller file.

Are my images uploaded anywhere?

No. Conversion happens inside your browser using the canvas API and a Web Worker — files never leave your device. There is no upload step, no queue and no file size limit beyond your machine's memory.

Is EXIF metadata kept in the converted image?

No — and that's a feature. Re-encoding through the canvas strips all metadata: GPS location, camera model, timestamps and color profiles. The output contains pixels only, which is usually what you want before sharing an image publicly.

Can I convert many images at once?

Why did my image get re-compressed even converting PNG to PNG?

The converter always decodes to raw pixels and re-encodes, which is also how metadata gets stripped. For lossless targets (PNG, and GIF within its 256-color limit) the pixels stay identical; for JPEG and WebP the quality slider controls the trade-off.
