The cut-out is MODNet — Apache-2.0, about 25 MB, the model /id-photo already uses. If you have made a passport photo here, the file is already in this browser and the first click does not download it again.

Product shots and portraits, not a magic studio

Drop one photo or several. They queue; only one runs at a time so a second 25 MB fetch cannot start on top of the first. The output is a transparent PNG, or the same pixels flattened onto a colour you pick. An edge-softness slider feathers the matte, because hair against a busy wall is where every matting model is weakest.

What actually leaves the tab

The photo does not. There is no upload endpoint. The one network request is the model file from Hugging Face, and only when you ask for a cut-out. After that the feature works with the network off. Open DevTools on the Network tab if you would rather watch than trust.

Honest limits

MODNet was trained as a portrait matting model. A person on a plain wall is its best case. A product on a seamless backdrop usually works. A busy street, a subject the same colour as the wall, or a motion-blurred edge will look rough. Soften the edge or keep the original background — this page will not pretend a bad source is a setting you missed.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. The site is a static export with no upload endpoint. The photo is decoded, matted and encoded in this tab. The only download is the model itself, and your photo is not part of that request.

How is this different from the ID Photo page?

Same model, different job. ID Photo Maker is a passport-size wrapper with alignment guides and a 4×6 sheet. This page is a general cut-out: product photos, avatars, a transparent PNG. Two search results, one engine, one cache.

Do I need an account?

No, and there is nowhere to make one. The model is fetched from Hugging Face into this browser's cache. That is a download, not a signup.

Can I do several photos at once?

Yes — drop a handful and they queue. Only one inference runs at a time, because a second download must not start while the first is still landing. Failures are per file; the rest of the list keeps going.

The hair looks jagged. Can I fix it?

Partly, with the edge-softness slider. The bigger lever is the source: stand a metre in front of a plain, evenly lit wall. If it still looks wrong, keep the original background.
