- Locale: en · Also: [ja](https://bytescope.dev/ja/photo-organizer.md) · [zh-Hant](https://bytescope.dev/zh-Hant/photo-organizer.md)
- Runs: The folder is opened locally by your browser. Photos are sorted and moved directly on your disk — nothing is uploaded.
- Requires: Full mode needs Chrome, Edge or Opera on desktop (File System Access API) to read a folder and write results next to it. Firefox and Safari get a reduced mode: pick the folder through a file input and download the results.

## What it does

Photo Organizer reads the EXIF metadata of your photos to automatically organize them into clean date-based folder structures such as YYYY/MM. If EXIF capture date metadata is absent, it can fall back to the file modification date or place unorganized items in an Unsorted folder.

The tool also detects and separates screenshots based on filename heuristics, missing camera metadata, and standard screen aspect ratios into a dedicated Screenshots folder. A full change preview is displayed before any disk modifications occur, and an undo receipt is generated so moves can be reversed safely.

## Limits

Does not recognise faces or scenes; it sorts photos into folders by capture date and camera metadata.

## FAQ

### Are my photos uploaded to a cloud service?

No. EXIF parsing and file moving are executed directly on your local storage via the File System Access API. Nothing is uploaded.

### How does the date organization work?

The tool extracts the original capture timestamp from EXIF metadata and moves photos into customized date directory patterns such as YYYY/MM or YYYY/YYYY-MM.

### How does screenshot separation work?

Files without camera EXIF data matching common screenshot naming patterns or standard display dimensions are automatically sorted into a Screenshots/ folder.

### What happens if a destination file already exists?

You can choose between adding a numeric suffix (e.g. _1, _2) to prevent collisions or skipping existing files.

### Can I undo the organization after it completes?

Yes. Every move operation is recorded in a local undo receipt, allowing you to restore files back to their original folder locations.
